Sports Ticker – NBA Finals

The Heat Win Game 3 of Finals

Translation: The Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks are in the middle of a best-of-seven-games series (the finals) to determine the professional basketball champions. The two teams have now played 3 games. The Heat had won the first game and the Mavericks won (after losing by 13 points for 4 minutes left) the second game. The Heat won game 3 last night, in Dallas, 88-86. The Heat were winning by a lot again and it looked as if the Mavericks would comeback again but their best player, Dirk Nowitzki, missed the last chance at points of the game that would have made the score tied. Now the Heat only have to win two more games and they will be the champions.

Conversation Starter: “Did you catch the finals game last night? Who do you think is going to win the series?”

Nadal Beats Federer to Win French Open

Translation: Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are the two best, male, tennis players in the world right now and two of the best players of all time. It seems like (although it’s not completely true) that these two players play each other in Tennis Championships all the time. Yesterday was the finals of the French Open, one of the four biggest and most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world. Nadal defeated Federer to win the French Open tournament for the 6th time in his career. Winning a tournament as prestigious as the French Open 6 times is extremely impressive and shows that Nadal is still the best male tennis player in the world.

Question of the Day from Michael in New York: What does it mean in basketball when there are fouls to give?

Answer: Although players are allowed to make contact with one another in basketball, there are forms of illegal contact that are called fouls. If a player is fouled while trying for a basket they get foul shots, which are free shots, each worth one point. If a player is fouled and they are not trying for a basket the game is temporarily paused and they continue to play. However, there is a limit to how many times the defending team can foul before the other team begins to take the free shots even if they are not trying to make a basket. Fouls to give are the number of fouls that a team can commit before the other team gets free shots after every foul.
