Special – Basketball and Hockey Champions

The Boston Bruins Win The 2011 Stanley Cup in 7 Games

Translation: The Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks competed for the professional hockey championship in a best-of-seven-games series. Last night, the Bruins won the 7th game of the series, by a score of 4-0, which was their 4th win of the series, making them the hockey champions! The winner of the hockey championship is awarded with a trophy known as the Stanley Cup, which has become the symbol of hockey greatness. The Bruins hadn’t won a championship since 1972.

Conversation Starters:

  • “How ’bout them Bruins!”
  • “That was a great hockey series, huh?”
  • “I heard that there is rioting in Vancouver. They are a huge hockey town.”

The Mavericks Win the NBA Championship

Translation: (This news is from Sunday night. We sincerely apologize for the delay). The Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat competed in a best-of-seven-games series to determine the professional basketball (NBA) championship. On Sunday, the Mavericks won their fourth game of the series, 105-95, to win the championship. The Heat won two games in the series. This is the first time that the Mavericks have ever won the championship and there are a number of great players on the Mavericks (Drik Nowitzki, Jason Kidd e.g.) who had never won a championship in their careers. The Heat were expected by many experts, at the beginning of the season, to win the championship because they have three of the best young players in basketball, including Lebron James who chose to play in Miami because he thought it would be easier to win a championship with this team. Many people, who are not Heat fans, are happy that Lebron and the Heat lost to Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks.

Conversation Starters:

  • “How ’bout them Mavericks!”
  • “I’m really happy for Dirk and Kidd that they finally got championships.”
  • “The Heat really didn’t look like a championship team for most of that series.”
